Fans who enjoy Aquaman won’t have to wait long for the next DC movie to come out as Shazam arrives in theaters in April 2019.
The DC Extended Universe might not be scheduled as far in advance as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but DC has movies planned for the next few years and Shazam is the next movie to be released in 2019.
Shazam arrives in theaters on April 5, 2019. It will follow Captain Marvel (March 8) and premiere before Hellboy (April 12) and what will possibly be the biggest superhero movie of all time, Avengers: Endgame (April 26).
Shazam stars Zachary Levi as the superhero version of teenager Billy Batson. Billy is a foster kid trying to navigate the complexities of life and high school when he discovers an ancient power source that gives him superpowers when he says the magic word: Shazam!
The next entry in the DC Extended Universe comes out six months after Shazam. This is Joker, a standalone movie about Batman’s greatest nemesis that will exist in its own vacuum rather than tie into the other movies in the DCEU. Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, and in this inspired telling of the Joker’s origins we learn that the future super-villain was once a standup comedian, among other things. Joker arrives on Oct. 4, 2019.
Wonder Woman 1984 was originally scheduled for Dec. 2019 before being bumped up to Nov. 2019 to avoid running up against Star Wars: Episode IX in Dec. 2019. However, when Warner Bros cancelled Six Billion Dollar Man in 2020 it gave Wonder Woman a chance to move to June, giving the film another shot at total summer box office domination. The new premiere date is June 5, 2019.
DC has quite a few projects up in the air, with a Batman movie planned and the Birds of Prey movie in active development (and scheduled for a Feb. 7, 2020 release). There is also a Flash movie planned along with a sequel to Suicide Squad being penned by James Gunn. If Aquaman is a success at the box office, fans can expect to see a sequel on the DC calendar soon enough.
