The Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Clippers are two of the surprise teams of the NBA season, and they’ll face off against each other on Saturday.

At the beginning of the season, if anyone would have said that the Denver Nuggets would be the top team in the Western Conference, laughs would have broken out.

Well, people aren’t laughing anymore.

The West’s best team at 21-9, the Nuggets will attempt to hold on to that perch when they pay a visit to another surprising team, the Los Angeles Clippers.

Denver has gotten it done with a high-powered offense and defense, a testament to the system head coach Mike Malone put into place when he arrived in the Mile High City a few years ago. Malone has transformed a group of young, talented players into a juggernaut that will be a force to be reckoned with for the foreseeable future.

It’s just that no one thought that it would come so fast, so quick, but, here they are, sitting on top of the Western Conference, and it looks like they won’t fall out of the Top four in the West for quite some time.

Denver just wrapped up and four-game homestand undefeated, with their latest win coming over the slumping Dallas Mavericks 126-118. Though their defense faltered somewhat, their offense was still in harmony, led by basketball unicorn Nikola Jokic’s 32 points.

As surprising as Denver has been, the Clippers (18-13) have been even more surprising.

Head coach Doc Rivers should get Coach of the Year looks with the job he has done in L.A., with an ensemble cast led by Tobias Harris and Lou Williams, the Clippers are 5th in the West, a place many didn’t expect them to be right now.

After their home game against Denver, the Clippers will remain in California over the holiday weekend, first with a date at Golden State, and then a home game against the Kings, and a “road” date with the rival Lakers.
