In a Texas-sized matchup, the rejuvenated San Antonio Spurs will head down I-10 to meet their biggest adversary: The Houston Rockets.

For those who threw dirt on the San Antonio Spurs earlier in the season, they may want to grab a shovel and dig up their coffin, because the Spurs are looking like contenders again.

Using a revitalized defense and balanced scoring, the Spurs (18-15) will look to keep their hot streak going when they pay a visit to James Harden in the Houston Rockets, in what promises to be a Texas-sized matchup.

After a horrid stretch in which they game up over 120 points a game, San Antonio has recommitted itself to defense. After allowing the Los Angeles Lakers to score 120 points on Dec. 7, the Spurs have held their last seven opponents to under 100 points, going 6-1 in that stretch.

The latest victim of their clampdown was the Minnesota Timberwolves as they ran them out of the AT&T Center 124-98. Along with their defense, the Spurs have gotten balanced scoring throughout the roster, with LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan leading the way.

Now the Spurs will have an opportunity to slow down another high-scoring opponent, the Rockets (16-15), who will be playing without Chris Paul for the next three weeks.

Houston hasn’t looked like the same team that led the NBA in virtually every category last season, but recently, they have gotten the ship back on track, thanks to moving Eric Gordon to the starting lineup, and getting more production from the bench.

They got a blow on Dec. 20, however, when Paul limped his way out of their game against the Miami Heat and will be lost for the next three weeks. They still have Harden, though, but the schedule is beginning to turn tough for the Rockets, who will open a three-game homestand that will also see them host the Thunder and Celtics over the holiday weekend.
