5 things the Yankees must do if they miss out on Manny Machado
4. Re-sign Zach Britton
With all due respect to Robertson, Britton is a better pitcher at this point in their respective careers. He also has the advantage of being left-handed. For both reasons, he’s a more important free agent for Cashman.
The unfortunate truth for the Yankees is that betting on Aroldis Chapman to stay healthy for an entire season is a bad bet given the Cuban’s age and injury history. Bringing Britton back to the Bronx would give Boone an obvious replacement for Chapman whenever he’s unable to take the hill.
Britton take New York by storm when he came over in a deadline deal from Baltimore, but by the time September arrived he was a nightmare for opposing hitters. His electric breaking ball can make elite hitters look really silly. Britton’s ability to produce ground balls at a prodigious rate is also a huge asset in Yankee Stadium.
Currently, both the Phillies and Yankees are being linked strongly with a big move for Britton. This is a battle Cashman needs to make sure he doesn’t lose. If he misses out on Machado, expect Britton to be his next phone call.
