By Nir Regev
Bunchy stepped into the ring in place of Terry in an attempt to win the $50,000 grand prize, while Bridget heard the truth about her father from Lena on the latest Ray Donovan.
This recap contains spoilers for Ray Donovan season 6, episode 9.
This week’s Ray Donovan opened where the show left off with Ray being held in a psych ward. His doctor however, was kind to him, removing the constraints and talking to him like a friend rather than as a patient. Despite the doctor’s advice Ray managed to utilize Mac’s connections to get him out of the hospital after telling Bridget to call him. Bridget saw her father in an uncharacteristic state, tearing up, and truly asking her for help.
Bridget decided to call Lena to find out who the cop she’d called to free her father actually was and Lena reluctantly agreed to meet her there. Lena had started to tell Bridget that there’s ‘something she should know about her father’ but upon seeing him released decided to go but Bridget wouldn’t have it. Bridget pressed both for an answer until Lena told Bridget the truth about Ray’s jump from a building into the east river two months prior. For the first time, Bridget started to see despite her father always keeping a strong presence for her, he has problems going on just like her.
Above: Bridget would decide to not head off to Philadelphia after all, telling fiance Smitty she needs to be there for her father. Despite hearing about Ray’s attempt, Smitty seemed quite uncaring and selfish, trying to convince Bridget to leave anyway and that Ray ‘doesn’t need her.’ This after Ray saved him and his engagement from certain doom just episodes before!
Ray would meet with Mayor Ferrati in an attempt to show himself as a turncoat after Winslow fired him. In exchange for charges to be dropped for Bunchy, Ray told the Mayor he would give him the IA agent after him and the source. Ray would work out a deal with Emerson Lake where he would give his name and someone other than Mac as the person wearing a wire so Ferrati wouldn’t suspect Ray…
Above: Mickey would visit Terry after he didn’t respond to his call, citing missing his son. However, Terry didn’t buy it, asking his father what his real business was. Mickey would ask Terry to call Ray for him so they can have a conversation but Terry would decline and tell him to leave. It was saddening to see Terry’s hand shake once again, his whole body really as he took medication while Mickey was in the apartment. Mickey would notice the obvious damage on Terry and ask him, ‘Who beat you up son?’ Terry would tell him nobody beat him up, that he’s fighting bare-knuckle and two fights away from the $50,000 grand prize.
Above: Bunchy was still down from losing the $3 million dollars when Mickey called Daryll about fighting for the $50,000 grand Terry mentioned. Daryll declined citing that he’s a producer now. However, Bunchy overheard and was interested in the proposition immediately, likely to have something to give Maria and Teresa after making a promise.
Above: Bunchy would win the first fight in place of Terry thanks to some dangerous cheating by his father. Mickey had noticed Bunchy’s opponent used an asthma inhaler before the fight and during the fight swiped it. When the fighter tried to get the inhaler mid-fight it wasn’t there and he was quickly disposed of by Bunchy. However, Bunchy would not be as ‘lucky’ in the finals and was unable to get the win after taking severe hits.
Above: Despite Ray claiming Emerson Lake was dead, he was noticed driving off by Rad. Ray would arrive at Mac’s only to be ambushed by Rad and the officer who originally broke into Winslow’s apartment. Lake would be seen in the background on the couch, beaten, as Aerosmith’s “Dream On” played in the background like the episode’s namesake.
