The day after Christmas is one of the most anticipated days on the Premier League calendar, and 2018 is no different. One of the biggest games on the schedule sees the current league leaders welcome a mid-table foe to their ground.
Barring a mishap against Wolves on the 21st, Liverpool will enter this game as leaders of the Premier League. They’ve carried their strong form from last season into the new campaign, and have made improvements in areas of weakness. New goalkeeper Alisson has proven to be a wise (if costly) investment, and Xherdan Shaquiri could be the most dangerous super sub in the sport. Liverpool proved that they deserved a seat at the table last season. Now they’re aiming for the biggest chair at that table: the league title.
Newcastle sit in 14th, uncomfortably in the logjam of teams hovering between the true middle of the table and the relegation zone. If they can handle Fulham on the 22nd, they’ll have accomplished two important tasks. For one, the win will buy them three points of breathing room in a very congested part of the table. Secondly, winning against Fulham will give them momentum before facing Liverpool, one of the toughest tests they will face all season. It’s hard to face the Klopp-engineered machine at any time, but going into the game with a bit of extra confidence could potentially swing the result in their favor.
The highly talented and prolific triumvirate of Firmino, Mane and Salah are once again firing on all cylinders, and will likely figure into the result if Liverpool come away with a win at Anfield As is the case with any Liverpool game, expect a lot of chances – and maybe a lot of goals to go with them.
