The Washington State Cougars and Iowa State Cyclones will square off in the 2018 Alamo Bowl on Friday night in a fascinating matchup.

Late in the regular season, it appeared that the Washington State Cougars might be playing for an outside shot at the College Football Playoff. However, an Apple Cup lost knocked them out of the picture there and out of the Pac-12 title game. Now, they go to the Alamodome on Friday, Dec. 28 for a matchup with the Iowa State Cyclones.

Under the watch of Mike Leach, Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew has been phenomenal this season after transferring from East Carolina. The mustachioed signal-caller threw for just shy of 4,500 yards this season to go with 36 touchdowns and is a true weapon running this offense.

As the season wore on, though, Iowa State became a more dangerous offense of their own. They’ve had a top-tier running back in David Montgomery all year, but the emergence of young Brock Purdy at quarterback has been immensely important for the Cyclones this season. With him running the show, this is a potent unit that can score with anyone.

What the Alamo Bowl may come down to is which defense will make a play. Both units on that side of the ball qualify as good-not-great units, but one big play with these explosive offenses could make all the difference in how this one plays out on Saturday night in San Antonio.

This rendition of the Alamo Bowl should be quite interesting as you have a high-powered Pac-12 offense with Washington State and a traditional, grinding Big Ten team in Iowa State. Either way, it’s hard to say what the outcome will be in San Antonio, but it should be a fun ride on the way to finding out who emerges the winner.
