Although the Cleveland Browns stumbled to begin the 2018 regular season, they became one of the league’s most dangerous teams under the guidance of head coach Gregg Williams and offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens.
The Cleveland Browns fired Hue Jackson during the 2018 season, as the team was 2-5-1 and consistently failed to close out games despite having the league’s most impressive rookie in quarterback Baker Mayfield. Previously, Jackson won just one game in two seasons for the Browns, making him the NFL’s least successful head coach.
Since firing Jackson, the Browns are 5-2 under head coach Gregg Williams, a long-time defensive coordinator. Though Williams’s past includes being the leader of the “BountyGate” scandal with the New Orleans Saints, his effective defensive coaching and aggressive attitude helped the Browns become one of the NFL’s most dangerous teams in the second half of the season.
Credit should also go to offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, who replaced Todd Haley, a former Kansas City Chiefs head coach, at the position. Kitchens has helped get the most out of the Browns playmakers on offense, including Mayfield at quarterback and Nick Chubb at running back.
While Williams and Kitchens have done an admirable job of leading the Browns following Jackson’s dismissal, there’s no guarantee that either will remain with the team in 2019. Though they should be considered among the favorites for the position, owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager John Dorsey could opt for a bigger splash.
