NFL DraftKings December 30 Early Afternoon Bargain Picks
By Bill Pivetz
Here are some bargain picks to use in the early afternoon NFL DraftKings slate.
Here it is. Week 17. The final regular season week for football. That doesn’t mean the DFS stops, though. We’re playing all through the playoffs. But first, the early NFL DraftKings slate. There are seven games starting at 1 PM, not as many games as previous weeks but you can still make a competitive lineup.
The seven games are ATL/TB, DAL/NYG, CAR/NO, NYJ/NE, JAX/HOU, DET/GB and MIA/BUF with the home team listed second.
There are a few things of note heading into this slate. With the New Orleans Saints already clinching home-field advantage in the playoffs, they may rest some of their players this game. The same could be said for teams eliminated from the playoffs. With nothing to play for, why risk injury?
There are also a few players ruled out for this week, including Odell Beckham. Leonard Fournette, Kenny Golladay, Davante Adams are either questionable or doubtful for Week 17. Keep tabs on the injury reports as we get closer to game time.
If you want to save some of your budget, there are a lot of bargain plays that could break out for big games in Week 17. Here are a couple of picks from each position.
NFL DraftKings: Quarterbacks
Sam Darnold is a big bargain play. He didn’t face the New England Patriots the first time the New York Jets played them this season. But, with back-to-back 20-plus point games, he can make an impact.
Darnold has thrown just one interception in his last three games. He has six touchdowns in that span. With Robby Anderson and Chris Herndon stepping up, Darnold can have another good game. At $5,200, that’s a steal.

Another option would be Teddy Bridgewater. Sean Payton already said Drew Brees will not start until the divisional round of the playoffs. This gives Bridgewater his first start since 2015.
The downside is that he may not be playing with the Saints star players as Michael Thomas, Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara may also be resting this game.
However, players like Tre’Quan Smith, Ben Watson and others could step up and help Bridgewater to a serviceable game. He’ll cost just $5,300.
NFL DraftKings: Running Backs
Atlanta Falcons running back Brian Hill had his breakout game last week. He rushed eight times for 115 yards. The Falcons like to use multiple players in the backfield, so he may get another shot at some carries against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Tevin Coleman will start the game but with the Falcons eliminated from the playoffs, his time on the field may not last long. Against the poor Bucs rush defense, Hill could break 100 yards again. He’s priced at $3,900.
David Williams of the Jacksonville Jaguars will split time with T.J. Yeldon this week. Williams has just six carries for 34 yards this season. Regardless, the Jaguars will take a cautious approach to this game and attempt to limit the turnovers from their quarterback.
The Houston Texans rank 11th against the run. Williams could be the latest backup running back to help fantasy owners this season. He’ll cost the DraftKings minimum $3,000.
NFL DraftKings: Wide Receivers
Mohamed Sanu could be in line for a big game as Julio Jones may be limited in playing time. Jones is still recovering from a hip injury, freeing up more targets for Sanu and Calvin Ridley.
Sanu finished with five catches on eight targets with 81 yards and a touchdown. He has just four touchdowns and a one 100-yard game this season, so his chances of having a high-scoring game or unlikely but the opportunity is there. He’s priced at $4,800.
Texans wide receiver DeAndre Carter should see some extended playing time this week. Demaryius Thomas was placed on the IR and Keke Coutee is listed as questionable. DeAndre Hopkins will likely get the majority of the targets but Carter could see a few go his way.
Carter has eight catches for 116 yards in his last two games. The Texans love throwing the ball so even if Coutee is ready to play, Carter will see some action as the team’s third wide receiver. He’ll cost just $3,600.
The early DraftKings slate doesn’t have the greatest matchups. But there are some star players involved. If you can have the right combination of stars and bargains, you can come out ahead. Good luck in Week 17.
