Who would have thought it? The way Manchester City were playing so far, it would have been hard to stop them. But 3 teams have done it in quick succession, and now the wheels seem to have flown off. Manchester City are 7 points behind a Liverpool team that looks stronger by the week.

City have played some scintillating football this season, but over the last few weeks, we have been able to see what happens when teams they face are clinical in possession. Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester all faced a Man City onslaught, not spearheaded by Sergio Aguero. City were wasteful, they’re opponents clinical.

When teams pounce on the chances presented to them by City, they can get glory. The problem for City compounds when they face Liverpool on the 3rd. Liverpool are miserly in defense, conceding the least number of goals and barely any chances. The combination of Virjil Van Dijk Allison has tightened up the Liverpool rear guard.

Additionally, Mo Salah has found glorious form in recent weeks, and the addition of Xherdan Shaqiri to the squad has helped, with the Swiss international chipping in some vital goals. Liverpool are suddenly a multi-pronged, defensively tight team. Goals can come from anywhere, and they very rarely leak them. Liverpool are nothing if not clinical, and should be guaranteed a fair few chances against City.

The biggest issue for City against Liverpool this time is they cannot be cautious. Or, they cannot be as cautious as they were in the reverse fixture. The match at Anfield was a major sign of mutual respect between the two managers and teams, and while some called it dull, it was actually a tense tactical battle. Both teams canceled each other out, and while Manchester City grew into the game in terms of possession, they never really threatened. Neither did Liverpool, though.

City have to be riskier this time around. They have to go for the win in order to close the gap at the top. This plays into Liverpool’s hands though, they are ruthless on the counter. City saw what Liverpool could do when there are spaces to attack in the Champions League last season, losing both legs.

This fixture couldn’t come at a better time for the neutral, because should City win (home advantage), the title race is blown wide open again. Tottenham, who currently sit in 2nd could also close the gap and truly make the title race a 3 horse one. City will be looking to fight back, while Liverpool, riding high, will be looking to maintain momentum and take control of the title as soon as they can.

They are in pole position but face a Manchester City side out to set the rhetoric straight. This one promises to be a cracker.
