2019 NFL mock draft: Josh Allen heads to the 49ers
By Brad Weiss
The San Francisco 49ers went into the 2018 NFL season with high expectations, as they were able to get their franchise quarterback under contract in the offseason. After trading for Jimmy Garoppolo during the trade deadline in the 2017 season, Jimmy G led them to five straight wins to close out the year once he moved into the starting role, making the 49ers a sexy playoff pick in 2018.
Well, the 49ers ended up being one of the worst teams in football, and Garoppolo saw his season end due to a knee injury. As they head into the offseason, they have good talent on both sides of the ball, and the expectation is that Garoppolo will be back, and ready to roll for Week 1 next September.
With their first round pick in April, which currently is the No. 2 overall pick, the 49ers need to do something to bolster the pass rush. Over the past couple of weeks, Josh Allen from Kentucky has started to rocket up the draft boards, and he would be a perfect fit for the 49ers defense with the second pick in April.
Quinnen Williams is one of the better prospects of this draft class, but Allen fills more of an immediate need for the 49ers in 2019. Allen is a guy who can play on the outside, or come up and play the edge, and at the NFL level, he could have the kind of impact that Joey Bosa had as a rookie for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017.
