Chelsea will welcome longtime Premier League foe Newcastle to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, hoping to improve on a less than optimal run of form over their last several games.
The Blues will enter Saturday’s game without wins in their last two competitive games, the latter being a loss in the Carabao Cup semifinals to Tottenham. Chelsea were also unsuccessful in their last Premier League game, playing to a goalless draw with one of the worst teams in the league in Southampton. Even with their recent slump, Chelsea still sit in fourth place in the Premier League table, and a win could widen the ever shrinking gap between them and Arsenal. The Blues will want to look more like the team that beat Manchester City instead of the one that lost to Leicester a few weeks ago.
Newcastle are winless in their last four Premier League games, and are slipping further and further down the table. A loss on Saturday could see them slip below the relegation line, depending on other results around the league this weekend. They’ll need a strong and inspired showing, something they’ve been unable to produce against some of the perennial Premier League powers this season. That four game losing streak includes losses to both Liverpool and Manchester United. If those are any indication, Saturday could be yet another frustrating day for Newcastle and their supporters.
Chelsea will want to put some distance between themselves and Arsenal ahead of the showdown between the two sides next week at the Emirates. Given their current form, Newcastle could be the perfect opponent for Chelsea to regain their confidence against, especially ahead of a particularly rough portion of their schedule. The Blues will take on Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham before March, meaning that any opportunities for a less stressful win will need to be taken.
