Barcelona successfully navigated a tricky away game against Getafe last Sunday, courtesy of a sublime long-range Luis Suarez volley and some generous refereeing. That win left them five points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid – and ten above Real Madrid down in fifth. Nonetheless, many fans still remain unconvinced by either Philippe Coutinho or Arturo Vidal, and there’s uncertainty over whether coach Ernesto Valverde will be at the club next year.
Having already brought in Jeison Murillo from Valencia due to a raft of defensive injuries, it looks like Barca might be on the search for attacking reinforcements as well. That’s because back-up forward Munir has decided not to renew his contract, which expires at the end of the season, and the club have indicated that they’d like to replace him now rather than in the summer, with Paco Alcacer having signed permanently for Dortmund in December.
Eibar are enjoying their first spell in La Liga, having been promoted to the Spanish top flight in 2014 under current Bilbao manager Gaizka Garitano. Their present coach Jose Luis Mendilibar led them to a best-ever finish of ninth last season, although they’re just five points above the relegation zone going into this game.
The Basque club’s home kit is based on that of today’s opponents, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. Their Ipurua stadium only holds a little over 7,000, whereas they’ll be playing in front of close to 100,000 today at the Camp Nou. Asier Riesgo has proven a more than capable deputy for injured first-choice goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic and will need to continue that good form here.
