Everton face Bournemouth at Goodison Park on Sunday, Jan. 13. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

It’s no secret that Everton want to elevate themselves to the top tier of English football. To be amongst the elite, a regular challenger to the top four places and a staple part of European football. New owner Farhad Moshiri went out of his way to make marquee signings last season, but the year was an underwhelming one.

After their pursuit of Marco Silva, midway through last year saw Watford’s season capitulate, Everton finally got a hold of their man this year. Their man for the future at the helm, Everton went after key targets in different positions, Lucas Digne, Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina all making a significant impact on the team already. Yet, Everton are nowhere close to breaking into the stranglehold of  top 6. They currently lie in 11th position, nine points off Manchester United in 6th. So where did it all go wrong? Marco Silva was supposed to be their man.

For starters, despite quality signings, losing the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and John Stones has had a major impact. Everton’s problems have come in their lack of consistency this season. They can pull of spectacular performances against the bigger sides, but capitulate against smaller teams. They have only one win in the last eight league games. Moshiri has made it abundantly clear to Silva that the league position wasn’t good enough, but also stated that he believes in the long-term vision of the club.

Luckily for Everton, they are up against a Bournemouth side struggling for form themselves. Despite a wonderful start to the season, Bournemouth have tailed off and now find themselves in 12th place, level on points with Everton. But they shouldn’t be as concerned as their opponents. They have a squad ravaged by cruciate ligament injuries to three key players. Having signed Nathaniel Clyne and Dominic Solanke already, they will be confident and hopeful for the rest of the season.

Watching Bournemouth, one can really sense a spirit and togetherness, a unity and a belief in the system they play set forth by their manager, Eddie Howe. It is for this reason they play with more freedom than many other teams at their ‘level,’ and it is for this reason that they should pose a real test to an under confident and fragile Everton side.
