After entering the transfer portal on Friday, Oklahoma is blocking former quarterback Austin Kendall from being immediately eligible.

Kyler Murray is out, Jalen Hurts is in and that leaves Austin Kendall seeking a new school after entering his name in the transfer portal. But Oklahoma is making things extremely difficult for Kendall to go to the place he wants to go as they are blocking him from having immediate eligibility should he transfer to West Virginia as a grad transfer, according to ESPN.

The Big 12 has a rule that allows schools to meddle in the affairs of grad transfers who are otherwise eligible to play right away. He could still transfer to West Virginia but would have to sit out a year and be left with just one year of eligibility. He’s also blocked from having immediate eligibility to all other Big 12 schools and Oklahoma opponents, including Tennessee where Kendall originally was committed to before landing at Oklahoma.

During his career at Oklahoma, Kendall appeared in just six games backing up Murray and Baker Mayfield. He threw for a total of 265 yards and three touchdowns. New Mountaineers coach Neal Brown recruited him while he was an assistant at Kentucky. He would be a favorite to win the job with two-year starter Will Grier off to the NFL.

Oklahoma blocking Kendall from becoming immediately eligible at a school he wants to play at and where he’s wanted is a bad look. Oklahoma has their quarterback of the present with Hurts transferring in and their quarterback of the future in incoming freshman, Spencer Rattler.

Auburn is another school that Kendall has interest in if he looks elsewhere, but don’t be surprised if Oklahoma relents and allows Kendall to transfer without restrictions after a public backlash to this move.

Update (5:30 p.m.): Oklahoma has backed off their restrictions for Kendall and will allow him to transfer to West Virginia and he will be eligible right away.
