Tiger Woods commits to play the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines next week, a course where he’s won eight times.

Tiger Woods is making his 2019 PGA Tour debut at a course he knows all too well.

Woods announced on his Twitter page Wednesday that he will play the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego next week. Woods is a seven-time champion of this event and also won the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, his last major championship.

The 2019 season for Woods begins with much different expectations than last year. When Woods played the Farmers Insurance in 2018, it was his first tournament in a year after undergoing his fourth back surgery.

Woods was just “hoping to finish an event” back then, but after how the rest of his 2018 season went he’s expecting more in 2019. The first sign he was back came with a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship in March.

He then held the lead during the final round of the Open Championship and was second to Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship. Finally, Woods won his first PGA Tour title in nearly five years at the season-ending Tour Championship in September.

He made 18 starts in 2018, nearly as many as the previous four seasons combined (19). At this time last year, Woods was ranked 647th in the World Golf Rankings; he’s now up to 12th.

Don’t expect Woods to play a busier schedule this year, though. He struggled at the end of 2018, going without a point as Team USA lost the Ryder Cup then losing The Match to Phil Mickelson. Woods admits he played too much last year, a mistake he says he won’t make again.

“Certainly, I don’t foresee myself playing as much as I did this year,” he said back in December. “This next year is about peaking at the right times and staying fit.”

Several of the world’s top players will join Woods at Torrey Pines next week. World No. 1 Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler are also in the field. One notable player missing, however, is Mickelson.

Mickelson has played the Farmers Insurance in his hometown of San Diego 28 years in a row, but has not yet committed to the event this time.

Woods also said on Wednesday he will play the Genesis Open at Riviera on Feb. 14-17, which is hosted by his foundation.
