DraftKings College Basketball Picks: January 17
By Ramon Scott
There’s a huge slate of college basketball games on Thursday but unlike Wednesday’s 11-game DraftKings College Basketball slate, tonight’s card features just six matchups, featuring the huge game in the Big Ten between Michigan State and Nebraska, as well as, four games from the Pac 12, including games involving conference unbeaten teams Arizona, Washington, and Oregon State.
The DraftKings College Basketball action kicks off at 7 EDT/4 PDT with a Conference USA meeting between Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion, which shouldn’t merit much interest with the lowest betting overnight betting total (129).
DraftKings College Basketball Picks: January 17
High-end Forwards
JUSTICE SUEING (California – $7,300): The Golden Bears are mired in a five-game losing streak but that doesn’t mean Sueing won’t get his required fantasy points to return value at Washington State, which has lost six-in-a-row. While all eyes may be on the Cougars’ Robert Franks, who is expected to return from a hip contusion, the Cal sophomore costs $2,800 less than the recovering star. Sueing produced 36 fantasy points in the each of the two meetings with the Cougs last season.
ISAIAH ROBY (Nebraska – $7,000): Roby ranks behind seven other forwards on the salary chart but may be placed for maximum usage in this expected close game against the Spartans, which has a betting total of 146.5 overnight. Just two games ago on Jan. 10, the junior was $7k at home against Penn State and he played 38 minutes, racking up 52 fantasy points and was a part of the nuts lineup that night in a 70-64 win.
Value Forwards
ROMELLO WHITE (Arizona State – $5,000): The sophomore fell far short of a reasonable expectation over his last two starts but those were on the road. With the Sundevils projected to score close to 75 points and an ownership projection that could be well under 10 percent, White could return a value similar to his last home start against Colorado on Jan. 5 when he was part of the perfect lineup, putting up 32 fantasy points in just 26 minutes.
NAHZIAH CARTER (Washington – $4,400): The sophomore is averaging nearly 20 fantasy points over the last six games which would certainly beat a reasonable projection here given his price tag, and he could come in well under 15 percent ownership. The Huskies reserves have been strong in fantasy categories all season, while the Cardinal defense is allowing close to 70 fantasy points to opposing reserve units.
High-end Guards
JAYLEN NOWELL (Washington – $7,500): Nowell has decidedly beaten a reasonable projection in four straight contests, averaging over 37 minutes and 37 fantasy points, and was part of the nut lineup twice in home games against Fullerton and Washington State in two of those games. He could be a reasonable target with an ownership projection that could come in at around 20 percent, but he’s a guard that can add rebounds to his usually full stat sheet.
ETHAN THOMPSON (Oregon State – $7,000): Thompson was one of the nut guards four days ago in a 79-66 win over visiting UCLA, putting up 38 fantasy points in 39 minutes. He rarely leaves the floor, averaging over 36 minutes per game, except for one game last month when foul trouble limited him to just 17 minutes in a win over Pepperdine. Since Dec. 1, he’s scored at least 25 fantasy points in all but two contests.
Value Guards
DAVID CRISP (Washington – $5,700): The senior gets plenty of playing time and is averaging over 28 fantasy points over his last four outings. He also provides cash-game protection with a modest floor, having scored 21 fantasy points or more in eight of his last 10 outings. The Huskies, which have won five straight games, are expected to score 74.5 points in this home matchup against Stanford.
MATT BRADLEY (California – $5,200): The freshman has been back in the Bears starting lineup for the last three games, which has resulted in at least 34 minutes per start. He will be very lightly owned for this matchup against Washington State has averaged over 10 shots over his last four outings, and is among the national leaders in three-point percentage (53 percent). Cal has struggled, but the Cougars have been awful at preventing opposing players from getting their fantasy points.
