NFL DraftKings Conference Championship: 3 Cheap Receivers
By Bill Pivetz
Here are three players to use for DraftKings on championship weekend that could have a breakout game.
The four teams left in the NFL Playoffs have star players that will get their fair share of targets or carries. The teams also have deep rosters and could see an unknown player step up and have a breakout performance. It’s those players that will make a difference when building your DraftKings lineup this weekend.
We know about Tyreek Hill, Michael Thomas, Julian Edelman and the like. But, what about the players that quarterbacks target when their top target is covered? They look to their No. 2 or No. 3 option to make a big play.
All four teams have good secondary targets that could score some fantasy points. All you need to do is figure out which secondary option is going to get enough receptions to be worth adding to your DraftKings lineup.
Lucky for you, I’ll list three players that could have a breakout game during championship weekend and score a lot of fantasy points.
Tre’Quan Smith, NO
While Smith isn’t a complete unknown, he hasn’t even been close to the level he was at in Week 11. He’s scored less than five points in five of his last six games, including two zero-point games. Drew Brees will feed Thomas and Alvin Kamara, no doubt.

Keith Kirkwood is listed as questionable for this game. We could see a deep ball or two for Ted Ginn but Smith could also see his share of targets throughout the game. A 60-yard catch for a touchdown isn’t out of the realm of possibility. That’s a quick 13 points.
Josh Reynolds, LAR
Reynolds is the Los Angeles Rams’ No. 3 wide receiver behind Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods. The Rams tight end situation with Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett isn’t as consistent as other teams.
Reynolds had a big game in Week 17 but was held to just one catch for 19 yards against the Dallas Cowboys in the division round. The Saints are ranked 32nd against opposing wide receivers. With Woods and Cooks drawing a lot of interest, Reynolds could sneak through with a 15-point game as the slot receiver.
Sammy Watkins, KC
After a seven-game absence, Watkins had a good game in the division round against the Indianapolis Colts. He recorded six catches on eight targets for 62 yards. Patrick Mahomes will force-feed Hill the ball. Travis Kelce will also get a lot of targets. After that, I think Watkins will have another six-reception game.
Looking at the Chiefs other pass catchers, Demarcus Robinson will take a back seat to a healthy Watkins. Chris Conley has zero catches in his last two games. Kelvin Benjamin was inactive last week and could be inactive again this week.
All three wide receivers are priced at no more than $4,200. That is less than 10 percent of the DraftKings budget. If you load up on star players, you will need to have one of these cheaper options in your lineup. If you want to be a complete contrarian, then adding two or all three will separate you from the pack.
