After a month-long winter break, the Bundesliga season resumes. In the best game of the weekend, RB Leipzig host Borussia Dortmund at Red Bull Arena on Saturday. Dortmund are first in the table, picking up 42 points in their first 17 games. Leipzig are fourth with 31 points but are facing stiff competition for the final Champions League spot.

Leipzig closed the first half of the season on a disappointing note, losing three of their final six games. The Red Bulls went out over the break and improved their midfield depth signing Amadou Haidara from Red Bull Salzburg and American Tyler Adams from New York Red Bulls. Both players will help Leipzig throughout the second half of the season as the Red Bulls have struggled with injuries this season. If Leipzig are going to qualify for the Champions League next season they need Timo Werner and Yussuf Poulsen to continue scoring at the same rate they did during the first half of the season. Werner has 11 goals this season, while Poulsen has found the back of the net eight times.

Dortmund hold a six-point lead over Bayern Munich after losing only once in the first half of the season. However, Bayern won five straight games going into the winter break and could catch Dortmund if Lucien Favre’s team drop points. Favre will have to make a major change to his start of the lineup for the rest of the season at center-back. Manuel Akanji had been Dortmund’s best center-back this season but will likely miss the rest of the season with an injury. Dan-Axel Zagadou and Omer Toprak will get the first chance at replacing Akanji but both players represent a downgrade at the position. Dortmund might rely on their offense to make up for the loss of Akanji. Favre’s team scored 44 goals in the first half of the season, with Paco Alcacer and Marco Reus combining for 23 goals.
