Patrick Mahomes could land NFL’s first $200 million contract

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could make history with a record-breaking contract extension after an MVP-caliber season.
No one in the NFL has had a breakout year quite like Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Not only did he throw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns this season, but he’s also a game away from the Super Bowl and expected to be the league MVP.
It’s only been one season, albeit an incredible one, but the Chiefs are already thinking about the future and locking up their franchise QB.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday morning that the Chiefs are already preparing for offer Mahomes a record-breaking contract extension after his rookie deal is up in 2020. That extension could reportedly be the first ever contract to be worth over $200 million.
The move obviously makes sense for the Chiefs. They’ve found a superstar quarterback that has taken their offense to the next level, and their team to the AFC Championship in just his first full season as the starter. The last time the Chiefs took a quarterback in the first round before Mahomes was Todd Blackledge in 1983, which makes the decision to land Mahomes and him turning into a star even more satisfying for the franchise.
That’ll make things a bit more difficult with the team’s cap situation in the long term, but no one can blame them for trying to lock up such a talented player at the most important position in the game.
The real question here is whether it’s the right move for Mahomes. He could take the long-term deal with a record-breaking contract, or he could take a shorter deal with the opportunity to collect on another huge contract in his late 20s to maximize his earnings.
Of course, taking a shorter deal poses more risk in the event something catastrophic were to happen, or his play simply didn’t live up to this ridiculous 2018 season.
Regardless of the outcome, it’s clear that Mahomes has already established himself as one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks at just 23 years old. The Chiefs know they’ve found their quarterback for the next decade, and they want to make sure they can do whatever it takes to ensure that he plays in Kansas City for his entire career.
The future is bright in Kansas City, and Chiefs fans are hoping that all of this good news will end with a Super Bowl to cap off an incredible season.
