87. . Safety. Alabama. Deionte Thompson. 16. player

The Carolina Panthers were one of the hottest teams in football to start the season, as Cam Newton and company looked to be the class of the NFC South. However, they ended up losing seven straight in the second half of the year, and it would have been eight if the New Orleans Saints started Drew Brees in the season finale.

As they look to 2019, they have to make sure Newton is healthy, and that is why they shut him down towards the end of the season. Newton could barely throw the ball 20 yards before being pulled, and the hope is that the extended rest can get him back to playing at an MVP level.

When it comes to the other side of the ball, the Panthers need a lot of help, and they should add a quality safety in the draft. The class of 2019 does not have a bunch of first round talent at the safety position, but Deionte Thompson from Alabama is certainly one and should hear his name called in the first round.

Thompson did not have the best showing in the national title game, and that has caused him to fall out of the first round in plenty of mock drafts. However, he has the size, speed, and coverage ability to be a standout player at the NFL level, and after adding talent in the first round on offense the last couple of drafts, going defense makes sense for the Panthers in 2019.
