Naomi #1 is the latest action-mystery story from superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis. In the debut issue, Superman’s appearance leads to questions.
It’s new, it’s fresh and it’s a lot of fun: Naomi #1 is a great start to the newest story from superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis and his new Wonder Comics imprint.
When Superman lands in Port Oswego to fight a supervillain in Naomi #1, it’s a huge deal to have the Man of Steel on the West Coast, even if the entire experience lasts a matter of seconds. But for Naomi, his appearance triggers questions about another superhero appearance that no one seems to remember. She might be onto something.
Spoilers for Naomi #1
As it happens, Naomi has something in common with Superman. Her therapist points out that they’re both adopted. But Naomi thinks that there’s something more than a case of the “Superman Complex.” Sure, as an adopted child being “special” is important, but there’s something about Superman’s appearance that is triggering a memory for her.
There’s also the problem that the news isn’t reporting on Superman’s appearance in Port Oswego. Superman is a busy guy who shows up at all points of the globe when there’s trouble, but no one reported on his brief time in Port Oswego and that’s contributing to Naomi’s quest to find information about that other time. Everyone in town is focused on the first appearance and when he gallantly came back to help clean up…but that other time? Nothing.
You know those urban legends like the spelling of “Berenstain Bears” where you spend your life thinking one thing and it turns out to be something entirely different? That’s where Naomi is right now. (And for the record, I swear it was always “Berenstein Bears” and I stand by that)
No matter who she asks, no one remembers another cape in Port Oswego until she finds someone who not only confirms what she’s thinking…but he adds a whole new layer to the mystery.
I read this book cold, with no prior knowledge of it, and I absolutely loved it. It’s fresh and it’s different, and Brian Michael Bendis’ story is bound to be intriguing. Naomi #1 hooked me and I’m eager to see where it goes.
