We’ve been hearing about a mystery team involved in the race for Manny Machado, and it appears the San Diego Padres are that team. But maybe they shouldn’t be.

The San Diego Padres have been a bottom dweller in the National League West for quite some time now. They haven’t finished any higher than third place in the division since 2010 as they’ve been in total rebuild mode.

That total rebuild is starting to take shape as they’ve accrued exceptional talent in their farm system whether it be by trade or the draft. Even though some around baseball isn’t too happy with general manager A.J. Preller’s methods, he’s done a fantastic job turning this team around. He’s without a doubt a top three third baseman in the league, and in some teams cases takes them from pretender to immediate contender.

There’s been a mystery team involved in the race for Machado this winter but nobody knew what team it was. It looks like the Padres are that team after officially putting themselves in the race. They surely have the money to make this move, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they should.

Here’s three reasons why the Padres should pass on Machado.
