Both the Mavericks and Hawks seem happy with the deal they made on draft night. Dallas obviously got Doncic, and the Hawks got Trae Young to help kickstart its rebuild. The first-round pick from the Mavs is nice too as Travis Schlenk envisions a Young-John Collins-led future with two more lottery talents thrown in. So, why not have the two teams do business again?

Now, this deal hinges on what the Mavericks think of Kent Bazemore. Statistically, it is not clear if he’s a better player than Wesley Matthews. Bazemore is a worse 3-point shooter at a lower volume and but is a better shooter on 2-point attempts. Bazemore also rates out as a positive defender according to DRPM, whereas Matthews is a clear negative according to DRPM.

This would be a straightforward deal, a one-for-one swap where the Mavericks send a future second-round pick or two, perhaps with some protections, and Matthews to the Hawks in exchange for Bazemore. The deal costs them a chance to easily clear out a ton of cap space this summer, but Bazemore’s deal only runs through next season and he’s the younger of the two players. And perhaps him playing with Doncic can make life a bit easier for him.
