12. Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames are really good. They have been really good in the past as well. They have a single Stanley Cup, coming in 1989 and it was likely a lucky mustache that helped them get there rather than a lucky jersey.

The Cup win came against a strong Montreal Canadiens team. The two teams had been the top team in their respective conferences so it was fitting that they met in the finals – something that doesn’t happen often in the NHL. It’s tough to win playoff games. The Flames won the Cup in game 6 at the Montreal Forum, but the red mile in Calgary would have you thinking the game was right there in the city.

The Flames’ lucky jerseys from that Cup win have become their alternates today. They look like they should have a McDonald’s logo on the front of them, but hey – who are we to judge if they are so clearly getting the job done.

The Flames haven’t had much luck since 1989. They made it back to the Cup final in 2004, but lost the series to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Jarome Iginla spent the bulk of his career on that Flames team, and the luckiest thing the fans in Calgary got through those years was watching him be the player every Canadian fan loves. He could score, he could fight, he could lead a team and do everything asked of him on the ice. The guy is a stud.

Fast forward to today and the Flames have possibly their best team since that 2004 Cup run that fell just short. They have a great, young core of players led by Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk and even though these kids are just stepping into their primes, it looks as though they are ready to compete for the Cup now. Watch out for this Flames team.
