We’ve once again made it to the biggest betting week of the year. Super Bowl week will have so many options, and we’re here to help guide you through.
It was an epic Sunday leading to a great matchup for the 2019 Super Bowl. The New England Patriots went to overtime with the Kansas City Chiefs, and they ended up taking the game after scoring a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams also went to overtime, and won their game by a field goal.
Both these teams came into the matchup as underdogs. That means, they only had to break the point spread to make people money. That’s what the Super Bowl is all about for many people. There are only so many fans of the Patriots and Rams (even if it feels like more and more Patriots fans pop up every year). For the 108 million Americans that will watch the game, they are going to want a rooting interest.
The goal now is to figure out who is going to win, and by how much. That’s the spot where you can make the most money. Points will make you money. If you continue to follow that formula, you can make it out of Super Bowl Sunday in the black.
To get things started, let’s take a look at the betting odds for Super Bowl LIII. All betting lines for this will come from OddsShark.
Super Bowl LIII Odds:
Points Spread as of 01/27: -2.5 Patriots to Win
Money Line Bets: New England -145, Los Angeles +125
Over/Under: 56.5
The odds right now show the Patriots as 2 1/2 point favorites over their opponents the Rams. That’s not how things started. The opening line had the Rams winning the game by 1 point, but then there was heavy money on the Patriots that moved the line 3 1/2 points. There needs to be A LOT of money for the line to move that much, especially for the Super Bowl where there’s a ton of money coming on both sides.
This is a very interesting line, because it’s about as close as it gets for a betting line. Last year, the Patriots went into the Super Bowl as 5-point favorites. If bettors had any confidence in the Philadelphia Eagles, they could make that bet knowing the game just needed to be close.
The Patriots have never won a Super Bowl by more than one score. That’s an interesting fact about this Patriots dynasty. They never blow teams out in the biggest games of the season. Yet, they’ve never won the game by less than three points. That means whoever you end up betting on, you’re betting on them to win.
Now, there is so much more to bet on than just the score. There are over 1,000 prop bets which go over anything from the length of the National Anthem to betting Kevin Durant points versus how much the Patriots score. (Here are 10 of our favorite prop bets that will make you money.) You can bet on the length of the National Anthem (Gladys Knight has the betting at over/under 1:45 for her rendition), which song with Maroon 5 sing first at the halftime show (One More Time is a +300 favorite) and which color Gatorade which splash on the winning coach (clear leads orange and yellow at +200).
Besides the game itself, the most popular bet is on MVP. The odds have been moving a lot since opening, but at the time of this writing Tom Brady remains the heavy favorite. His +125 makes sense since the Patriots are the favorite, and in four of the five wins by the franchise he won the Super Bowl MVP. Jarrod Goff comes in second at +250. He’s that high strictly because of his status as a QB. Since 2007, only three non quarterbacks have won the MVP award (one wide receiver and two linebackers).
This year, there are some real deals on some of the players. Todd Gurley can be had for +1000. That’s a real game-changing bet. Some bigger long shots include Sony Michel (+1200), Julian Edelman (+2000) and Aaron Donald (+1800).
One thing we don’t need to bet on is this year will likely surpass last year’s record for Super Bowl betting, thanks to more and more states making it legal. This will cause every Super Bowl from here on out and very important day for people’s wallets.
