With their second of three first-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders should look to address the depth issues that they have at the cornerback position. In 2018, 2017 first round pick Gareon Conley really stepped up, and looked like a legitimate shutdown corner at the NFL level.

If the 2018 NFL season was any indicator, Conley is going to be one of the best cornerbacks in the league, but he needs help around him. Guys like Daryl Worley and Nick Nelson should help out a lot in 2019, but it would make sense for the Raiders to use one of their three first round picks on the cornerback position this April.

One of the better cornerbacks in this year‘s draft class is Byron Murphy, who capped off his college career with a game-winning, pick-six in the Pac-12 Championship Game. He is the kind of guy that can legitimately shut down one side of the field at the next level, and teamed with Conley for the next five years, the Raiders could finally turned the cornerback position into a strength after being a weakness for so long.

This offseason, the Raiders went a different route, adding former draft analyst Mike Mayock as general manager. His expertise is going to go a long way in how the Raiders draft, but Jon Gruden will have final say, and he certainly was not happy with the fact the Raiders lacked depth in the secondary in 2018.
