This is a big factor in the recent success they’ve experienced in the Premier League in recent years, and it’s good to see Hasenhuttl bringing back these traditions that helped establish Southampton in the Premier League.
Additionally, Hasenhuttl has brought a clear tactical idea, and has whipped his wards into shape. Southampton are flexible, sitting deep and playing heavily on the counter against certain opposition — as they showed against Everton and Arsenal — but they can also press high and force mistakes. This is a team that plays with high energy, and with an intensity that has been missing for a couple of seasons now.
They come up against a Crystal Palace side who have shown great fight over the last month or so, pushing Liverpool to the brink, beating Manchester City before that and knocking Tottenham out of the FA Cup. They will be high on confidence and will look to continue their push up the table by snagging another important victory away from home.
It’s safe to say that Crystal Palace’s best games are those against bigger teams where they can sit tight and spring a counter. Against Southampton, it’s unlikely they will be given much space in behind, but should the match unfold according to form then it promises to be an intense, open and end to end game.
