Movie rental honcho Redbox got their best rom-com list right, for the most part.
As Valentine’s Day nears many of us will be looking for the perfect romantic comedy to watch with our significant other to put us in just the right mood. Lucky for us, Redbox.com has released their list of the best rom-coms in various categories. The winners were tabulated via votes from a panel of Redbox customers.
For the most part, the customers got it right — with a few exceptions. For example in the Favorite Romantic Comedy category fans voted Pretty Woman as their no. 1 choice, which really cannot be argued. The flick is probably one of the most-watched rom-coms ever and is one of those movies that is immediately watched whenever it airs on cable. However, 50 First Dates being named the no. 2 spot is a bit troubling. If you’re going to have an Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore matchup on the list it really needs to be the Wedding Singer, c’mon Redbox fans what are you thinking??

Favorite Romantic Comedy:
- Pretty Woman
- 50 First Dates
- Sweet Home Alabama
- There’s Something About Mary
- Coming to America
Next the Redbox panel voted on the Favorite Movie Romance (couple), which was pretty spot on (with one major couple missing).
The panel got it right when it voted Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds from the movie The Proposal into the no. 3 spot. It’s not a movie that a lot of people have seen but the on-screen chemistry was undeniable and they are one of my personal favorite couples.
Another must-have is Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks who have starred together in not one, not two, but three rom-coms including Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You’ve Got Mail (1998). It would be a crime to not include them for their chemistry in any of these movies.
But the list is glaringly missing Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams from The Notebook, which should be on the list above too by the way. The Notebook is widely considered to be one of the most romantic movies of all time (though it does miss the comedy element). It’s a shame they weren’t listed as a favorite couple.
