The defending national champions will look to defend their home court as the Villanova Wildcats take on the Georgetown Hoyas in a classic Big East rivalry.
All of America’s attention may be on the Super Bowl today, but there is a compelling Big East matchup taking place in Philadelphia. The No. 14 Villanova Wildcats play host to the Georgetown Hoyas in a Sunday showdown.
Villanova has rebounded nicely after an early-season funk, ripping off a nine-game winning streak to jump out to an 8-0 mark in Big East play. The Wildcats’ offense is firing on all cylinders, recording at least 80 points in five straight games, including Wednesday’s 86-74 road win over DePaul.
The go-to guy for Villanova has been senior forward Eric Paschall, who along with Phil Booth has provided veteran leadership for a young Villanova team. Paschall, who is averaging 17.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, scored 20 points in the Wildcats’ win on Wednesday.
The opposition comes in the form of the Hoyas, who are off to a 4-4 start in Big East play but enter the contest on a two-game winning streak, including an 80-73 victory over Xavier Thursday night. Georgetown’s best player has been senior center Jessie Govan, who has averaged 19.4 points per game and just over eight rebounds a night.
This game could be big for the Hoyas, who need to start picking up big wins to get themselves into consideration for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
