New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is named Super Bowl 53 MVP on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019. Is it still an accomplishment if you are named the Most Valuable Player in one of the most underwhelming Super Bowls in recent memory? For Edelman it probably is.
I wasn’t focused on that I was just focused on going out and having a good week of practice and do my job and sometimes the cookie crumbles that way,” Edelman said on the field after the game.
The Patriot’s won their sixth championship in 18 years when they defeated the Los Angeles Rams after scoring just one single touchdown in four agonizingly slow quarters. One so slow that many thought it could be the most boring game in all of Super Bowl history.
“It just matters that we won,” he said. “It’s been a crazy year and we have a resilient bunch of guys. It was unreal man.”
The slowness of the game, of course, should not diminish the accolades of Edelman who had 10 catches for 140 yards, made important catches and secured the first downs when needed in a game that was a defensive (and punters) showcase. According to CBS Sports, Edelman is now the second-leading receiver in catches and yardage in postseason history, first being Jerry Rice.
“If I had a little brother, it would be him,” Patriot’s quarterback Tom Brady said of Edelman shortly before he was announced as the MVP.
The Patriot’s have been named Super Bowl champions for the last three years in a row. They have previously defeated Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons.
Super Bowl 53 took place on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, live from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.
