Super Bowl 53 postgame quotes: Tom Brady is feeling his sixth title
The superstar team of coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady have won their sixth Super Bowl, with Julian Edelman putting on a phenomenal performance.
The New England Patriots tied the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins with six Super Bowls. In 11 appearances, the Pats have gone to the Super Bowl more than any other team.
For most of those, it has been all about Bill Belichick (66) and ageless Tom Brady (41) who have cemented the team’s celebrated success. A combined age of 107, there is no motivation for the team to search for successors for either accomplished titan.
At 41, Brady—considered to be one of the best, if not the very best—is taking no steps to plan his retirement party. He has already said that there is “a zero percent chance” that he will be going anywhere, and would like to keep playing until he’s aged 45. He told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson directly after the game that “it doesn’t change anything” about his plans. The New England Patriots’ quarterback is all about consistency and why would he change anything now?
The game was slow-going at first, with barely any points on the scoreboard, but once the lackluster halftime show concluded and we were on to the second half, the fourth quarter got an extra boost as Tom Brady completed four consecutive passes to lay the groundwork for running back Sony Michel to score the touchdown.
“We just kept fighting, finally got a touchdown,” said Brady to Wolfson afterward, about the slow buildup to victory.
“I wish we had played a little better on offense,” noted Brady. But the most successful quarterback was tremendously grateful for the win, especially thinking back to the demoralizing loss the year before.
“We’ve been this far and lost, which is really tough,” said the six-time Super Bowl ring holder.
A four-time MVP pick, Brady gave all credit to his teammate, wide receiver Julian Edelman, who achieved the distinction this year, for the first time.
“He deserves it,” Tom Brady said during the postgame ceremony. “That was one of the best games he’s ever played.”
It’s a major turnaround for the 32-year-old wide receiver, who began the year with a four-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.
“It was a crazy year,” noted Edelman, when interviewed by CBS’ Jim Nantz during the postgame celebration.
“I was just trying to go out and have a good week of practice and do a good job,” said Edelman, who now ranks just behind Jerry Rice in playoff receiving yards of all time, with 1,412.
“It just matters that we won,” added the wide receiver, who finished with 10 catches going for 141 yards in the game, eight of them resulting in first downs.
“It was like a home game here,” said the player, who was so integral to the Pats winning 13-3 over the Los Angeles Rams.
“We love you guys here. It was awesome,” said Edelman, as confetti and loud cheers surrounded him at the postgame celebration.
It seems like the New England Patriots will continue to stay at the forefront of football. Certainly as long as the almost-unbeatable team of Belichick, Brady, and Edelman remains together.
