Green Bay Packers-Sign WR Jamison Crowder

Davante Adams has become one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, and he had 111 receptions for 1,386 yards and 13 touchdowns (all top-10 in the league). But the next most productive pass catcher on the ream was tight end Jimmy Graham, with 55 catches for 636 yards, with inconsistency elsewhere in the wide receiver group as multiple rookies were leaned on.

That 56-catch gap between the No.1 and No.2 pass catchers was the widest in team history for the Packers. Geronimo Allison (who’s a restricted free agent) Marquez Valdes-Scantling or Equanimeous St. Brown could emerge as a second fiddle, or if Randall Cobb may be re-signed, but Green Bay should be in the mix for a wide receiver in free agency.

Crowder had a disappointing 2018 campaign with the Washington Redskins, catching just 29 passes over nine games as he missed time with an ankle injury. But he had 67 and 66 catches during the 2016 and 2017 seasons respectively, and his catch rate was north of 64 percent in each of his first three NFL seasons as primarily a slot receiver. Over those three seasons (2015-2017), Crowder’s 131 receptions out of the slot was good for seventh in the league and among receivers with at least 75 catches out of slot over that span he ranked fourth in yards per catch (12.33) on those catches.

Crowder has limitations as an outside receiver, due in part to his size (5-foot-9). But the Packers should be ready to add anything they can to take defensive attention away from Adams, while adding another legit weapon for Aaron Rodgers. Crowder may fall below the radar, and come at a discount with a down, injury-hampered season fresh in memory.
