Should your fantasy team worried about Rams Players?
After a dismal Super Bowl showing, the Rams offense came to a sputtering halt. Does this signal the end of an excellent fantasy team in LA, or will McVay turn things around?
Sean McVay IS the hottest name in football. Anyone who knows him suddenly got head coaching jobs and it seemed that all the NFL teams wanted a sliver of his magic, and for your fantasy team.
If you were a fantasy football owner of one his McVay’s tools, you were a happy camper. Cooks, Gurley, and Goff were all sure fire fantasy producers this year and there was little doubt on whether you should put them in your starting lineup. They consistently produced touchdowns and yardage.
Over 100 million people watched as that same offense did not accumulate 100 yards in the first half of the Super Bowl. They didn’t score a touchdown and only produced 3 points. Insanely enough, there was only one turnover late in the fourth quarter. That’s bad news bears.
After the Super Bowl, I remember pondering whether McVay had been exposed by a masterful coaching staff. If they had been, would McVay’s ingenious offense meet the same formula game after game in 2019?
Before we move further, an examination is in order of what roster changes will happen. On the offensive side of the ball, offensive guard Roger Saffold is the only unrestricted free agent that plays over 75% of the snaps. That’s minimal loss that should be replaced by resigning him or picking up a free agent.
On the defensive side of the ball there will be a sizable loss in the linebacker core. Littleton, Wilson, Longacre, and Fowler Jr. are all free agents. Adding Suh to the list of free agent defensive starters and that unit may look very different.
Why do defense units matter for a fantasy team? If the defensive can’t get off the field, the offense won’t get on. For the Rams, who put up bushels of points in the regular season, they relied on a solid defensive unit keeping the offensive unit on the field.
The real question is if the Rams will continue to be exposed. Goff could not figure out blitz packages and coverages and McVay made zero adjustments to keep the pressure off of him. When Goff was forced to act and think quickly, he faltered time after time.
That brings me to the leading case for why you shouldn’t be panicking over the Rams fantasy team options. Todd Gurley would have made Goff and McVay’s lives easier. It is apparent that he was not healthy. When he is, he makes defenses honest and stretches the field horizontally.
Without him the Rams looked horrible.
I expect McVay to add sizable help to the running back depth and hopefully they re-load the defensive roster. I expect they will as they are in a win now mode.
I continue to buy Rams stock next year. However, keep a very close eye on the running back depth.
