Real Madrid made up a couple of points on Barcelona in La Liga at the weekend, deservedly beating Alaves on Sunday after Barca had been a tad fortunate to emerge with a point from their clash with Valencia at Mestalla a day earlier. Despite those results, though, Madrid are still eight points behind Ernesto Valverde’s side in the league.
With their good fortune in the Champions League surely unable to hold for a fourth straight season, the Copa del Rey looks like the club’s best chance of a trophy this season. This will be the first of three El Clasico fixtures in the space of less than a month, with the second Copa del Rey tie being played near the end of February and then a La Liga game at the Bernabeu following just three days later.
