The Michigan Wolverines have still yet to get over the hump under Jim Harbaugh, but can their 2019 recruiting class help them do just that?
Late in the 2018 college football season, it did appear that the Michigan Wolverines were well on their way to being back. However, the wheels ultimately came off on their season. Not only did they get run into the ground by Ohio State in their rivalry matchup, but they got demolished again in the Peach Bowl as they took on Florida. So has been the story for the Wolverines under Jim Harbaugh.
Having said that, there remains good reason to have hope for the Wolverines moving forward. Yes, we need to see Harbaugh get in done in the biggest moments for Michigan, but he continues to bring in big-time talent. And, after having just the 22nd ranked recruiting class nationally in 2018, he has a big one heading into the 2019 season.
Daxton Hill is the star of the 2019 Wolverines recruiting class, the top safety recruit in the country and the No. 14 overall player. Hill isn’t the only 5-star player that’s coming to Ann Arbor either as defensive tackle Chris Hinton (No. 31 overall, No. 4 DT) is coming with him. Meanwhile, 4-star running back Zach Carbonnet is coming too, helping fill a backfield that could need him right away.
Those are big gets in the top 50 for Michigan, and it helps put them as the top recruiting class in the Big Ten. However, the Wolverines only have those guys in the top 100, which keeps them from competing with the heavy hitters in recruiting.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at their 2019 recruiting class, then hand out a grade for it.
On the one hand, the fact that Michigan is sitting atop the Big Ten in recruiting rankings is a massive coup for Harbaugh and the Wolverines. However, the fact that they are bringing up the back end of the top 10 in the country means there’s still a bit to be desired. Because of that last part, I can’t hand out an A-grade, though they’re close.
Grade: B+
