2019 NFL Draft: New York Jets 7 round mock draft

Next up in the seven round mock draft series are the New York Jets, the owners of the third overall pick.
With a young quarterback in place and new coach Adam Gase ready to get started, the New York Jets are in a prime spot to add to a young roster. Sam Darnold is the future and the 2019 NFL Draft should be about securing his future long-term. Gase was brought in with the sole purpose of developing the first round quarterback. The Jets have a star on defense in Jamal Adams and some solid pieces around him in the secondary. Up front there are needs, especially if they plan to move on from Leonard Williams this offseason. New York will be on an upward trajectory if they can nail this draft and help Darnold succeed.

Round 1 – Pick 3
Jonah Williams, T, Alabama
This mock draft saw two prime targets for the Jets go off the board with the first two picks; Nick Bosa and Josh Allen. Both would be the playmaking defensive end this team could use. New York has been void of an outside presence up front for a long time. They could reach a big for a player like Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell or Florida’s Jachai Polite but that does not seem like how this front office operates. New defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will likely bang the table for some edge help given the lack of options on the roster in New York.
The other option is to grab one of the stud defensive tackles in this class in Quinnen Williams or Ed Oliver. Williams would be higher ranked for me and pair well with Leonard Williams should the team retain the Pro Bowl defensive lineman. They are not edge players but both are athletic defensive tackles who can pressure the quarterback. Williams is the better of the two on film but Oliver has been about as dominant in his time at Houston as any player in the last ten years.
In the end it came down to protecting Sam Darnold and making the most out of his talents. That leads to the pick of Alabama’s Jonah Williams. Some are concerned with his length at the next level but he has held his own against the nation’s top pass rushers since he became the starting tackle. Williams, to me, is the clear cut top tackle. It may take some time for him to develop fully but pairing him with Darnold are great offensive building blocks for this team. There will be push from Oklahoma’s Cody Ford and Florida’s Jawaan Taylor but Williams wins out here.
