Why isn’t The Good Doctor new tonight, February 11? Find out why ABC isn’t airing a new The Good Doctor season 2 episode and when the show returns.

TV fans will notice that one of network TV’s biggest shows is pushing the pause button this week. ABC is not airing a new The Good Doctor episode on Monday, so what’s going on with the medical drama?

Yes, the series is still on tonight, but it’s not a new episode. Instead the network is serving up a rerun of this season’s fourth episode, “Tough Titmouse.” That’s the one where Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) goes back into his own past to help a patient who is struggling with the idea of being separated from his parents.

And Shawn’s mentor, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff), is hallucinating after his operation, which leads him to have to confront some personal history of his own.

So why isn’t The Good Doctor new tonight? There’s no major change to ABC’s primetime schedule this week; there is still a new The Bachelor lined up for Feb. 11. That means this isn’t a preemption situation. Instead, it looks like one of the most common tricks in the book.

Broadcast TV networks will often insert reruns or breaks into their schedule, because of the length of their seasons. They have to run a season from September to May, and only have 18 episodes to do that. With more weeks than episodes, they end up having to space things out.

Don’t worry, though, because The Good Doctor will be back next Monday in its regular time slot with its next new episode. So when someone asks, “Why isn’t The Good Doctor new?” you can tell them it’s just business as usual and it won’t be long before the hospital opens again.
