Manchester United face PSG at Old Trafford on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Champions League round of 16 kicks off on Tuesday with Manchester United hosting Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford. United finished second in their group behind Juventus, while PSG won their group ahead of Liverpool and Napoli.
The Red Devils have climbed up the Premier League table since firing Jose Mourinho and replacing him with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United are unbeaten under Solskjaer, winning eight of nine Premier League to move into fourth place. After looking lost and fighting among each other, United have been refocused and playing significantly better. While Solskjaer’s contract only lasts until the end of the season, he could become the fulltime United manager with a strong run in the Champions League.
No player has been better under Solskjaer than Paul Pogba, who has completely turned around his season. Pogba scored twice in United’s 3-0 win against Fulham over the weekend. Over his last nine games, Pogba has scored eight goals and assisted on another five United goals. If United are going to come out of the first leg ahead, they will need another strong performance from Pogba.
Thomas Tuchel’s first season in Paris has gone as planned. The German manager has won 19 of his first 22 Ligue 1 games in charge, losing only once. Despite PSG running away with the Ligue 1 title, Tuchel will be judged by how PSG do in the Champions League. PSG have made it to the knockout stage of the Champions League each of the past six seasons but have been knocked out in the round of 16 the past two seasons and have never made it past the quarterfinals.
If PSG are going to advance, they will have to do it without Neymar, who will be out for the foreseeable future with a broken foot. Tuchel can overcome the loss of Neymar by moving Angel Di Maria into the front three with Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe. If trio can score an away goal, it would certainly give PSG an advantage when the two teams play the second leg in Paris.
The biggest question for PSG will be their defense and midfield. In the group stage, PSG’s back four made mistakes that resulted in goals. They cannot afford to make the same mistake if they are going to advance. The club has refused to play Adrien Rabiot since the French midfielder announced he would not renew his contract. Leandro Paredes was signed from Zenit St. Petersburg in the winter transfer window and could find himself in the starting XI.
