Buffalo Bills: 5 offseason needs in 2019
4. Heir apparent to LeSean McCoy?
He is certainly one of the most productive running backs in NFL history. And 10-year-pro LeSean McCoy certainly has a lot of touches on his resume. That’s not to say he still can’t be a very efficient player and help out the Buffalo Bills’ offense in a variety of ways. But the fact is that quarterback Josh Allen led the team in rushing this past season. And be it the team’s numerous offensive line issues, the fact remains that McCoy needs to be spelled more often than he used to.
In 2018, the six-time Pro Bowler played in 14 games and totaled career-lows in yards from scrimmage (752) and total touchdowns (3). He amassed 161 carries (second-fewest in his career) for a personal-worst 514 rushing yards and three scores. He finished second on the team with 34 receptions, good for 238 yards but failed to reach the end zone. While McCoy led the club in rushing attempts, it was rookie quarterback Josh Allen who ran for more yards (631) and came up with more than half (8) of the club’s 15 scores on the ground.
Chris Ivory and Marcus Murphy as the top reserves at running back. Yes, the Bills ranked ninth in the league in rushing yards per game. But no doubt head coach Sean McDermott would prefer someone other than his quarterback lead the charge. But could the club be in line for McCoy’s successor?
