1. Kansas City Chiefs

This is a classic example of a situation where both the player and franchise need to understand the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. The simple truth is that Ford and the Chiefs are a perfect marriage.

In an ideal world, Kansas City can convince Ford that signing a long-term deal is in his best interest. Yes, he’d make a lot of money on a one-year franchise tag, but signing a four or five-year deal would give him real financial security. At least that’s the line of thinking the Chiefs front office should be pitching.

Kansas City’s defense cannot afford to lose any type of playmaker in the front seven. If Ford bolts the Chiefs this offseason, the team will really struggle to replace him. They’d either need to pay another free agent a small fortune or get lucky in the draft. Neither is a great alternative for a team that’s trying to win a Super Bowl in 2019.

If Ford returns to Kansas City next year he may not put up 13 sacks and force seven fumbles again, but he’s still going to do a ton to disrupt opposing offenses. Mahomes and the offense can out score a lot of NFL teams, but if they want to be true contenders they have to forge a defense capable of shutting down quality offenses. That would be nearly impossible without Ford in the mix next season.
