5 biggest All-NBA questions remaining this season
No. 3: What happens with Anthony Davis?
A month ago, the question wasn’t whether Anthony Davis would be making an All-NBA Team, it was simply if he’d be in the running for the first team.
A few things have changed since then, starting with Davis spraining his index finger and missing two weeks, during which the Pelicans went 3-6 and any hopes of the playoffs officially went out the window. That brought Davis’ missed games total up to 14 for the year, right around the point where voters will historically start docking you.
That number will only go up from here in light of the second factor potentially derailing AD’s candidacy: his trade request gone awry. We’ve never had a situation before where someone so prominently in the running for a spot on this team publicly requested to be moved, only to have it fail in spectacular fashion.
How much voters weigh Davis essentially upending an entire franchise is unclear. What they will have to consider is the Pelican’s eventual record (they’re 26-33 at the moment) as well as how many games the Brow ultimately misses. He left the last game before the break to get an MRI on his shoulder, and the Pels were already reportedly considering holding him out of the second end of all back-to-backs, of which New Orleans has three remaining. Throw in the fact that Davis just had three of his five lowest scoring games of the season, and it’s fair to wonder what the rest of the year has in store.
If things keep trending down, Karl-Anthony Towns is ready and waiting. Towns hasn’t missed a game all year and his Timberwolves could finish above .500. AD has KAT in the counting stats, although Towns has an outside shot to be the first player ever with 150 blocks and 150 made 3s in a season. Don’t rule out his stealing the spot.
