Earl Thomas, S

Is there anywhere else to start when looking at the Cowboys and free agents?

Former Seattle Seahawks star safety Earl Thomas has been a target of the Cowboys since he was a draft prospect. Being from Texas and growing up a Cowboys fan, Thomas would love to play with a star on his helmet. He’s said as much after a game in 2017.

Thomas is coming off a broken leg suffered in Week 4 of the 2018 season. For a player that will turn 30 before next season, he’s lucky it was a broken bone and not ligament damage. Either way that injury may cost him some money going forward. He is also an offseason removed from a very lengthy hold out that cost him all of the preseason.

Once the former All-Pro stepped on the field though, he was again one of the best safeties in the league. Thomas graded out as the second highest graded safety according to PFF. Despite his age, Thomas is clearly one of the best at his position across the league and will add a presence on any defense he joins.

Dallas also has a need at the safety position. The group is currently made up of Jeff Heath, Xavier Woods, and Kavon Frazier. That trio was solid, especially Woods, but could be upgraded to take an already talented defense to the next level. Thomas would add a dynamic playmaker that strikes fear in opposing quarterbacks on every snap. The Cowboys already had a strong defense in 2018 that is extremely young. Adding Thomas and a year of experience to that group could make it truly special in 2019.
