Atletico Madrid face Juventus at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The first leg of the Champions League round of 16 concludes on Wednesday with Atletico Madrid hosting Juventus at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Atletico finished second to Borussia Dortmund in their group and are second in La Liga, seven points behind Barcelona. Juventus finished first in their group and are running away with the Serie A title again this season. With 14 games remaining in the Serie A season, Juventus are 13 points ahead of Napoli.
Atletico are stumbling into the Champions League, losing two of their previous three games. Diego Simeone’s team are against excellent in their own half but have struggled to score goals. Outside of Antoine Griezmann, no Atleti player has scored more than two La Liga goals. The Spanish side are hoping the addition of Alvaro Morata will help improve their attack. However, the former Chelsea and Juventus striker has struggled to fit in with his new team. Atletico will need a strong performance from their two strikers if they are going to advance to the second leg with a led.
After winning seven straight Serie A titles and four straight Coppa Italia titles, the only thing left for Juventus to win is the Champions League. The title has eluded Juventus since their lone win in 1995-1996 but the club went all in, signing Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer. Ronaldo has been excellent in his first season in Turin, scoring 21 goals and adding 12 assists in all competitions this season, while helping Juventus maintain an unbeaten Serie A season. However, Ronaldo’s tenure in Turin will be judged by the success of Juventus in the Champions League. While Juve have made it to two finals in the past five years, they have not made it past the quarterfinals since 2002-03 when they lost in the final to AC Milan.
