FanDuel PGA: 2019 WGC-Mexico Championship Picks
Welcome to this edition of FanDuel PGA Picks from FantasyCPR.com. Here you will find players to target for this weeks WGC-Mexico Championship, taking place at the Club de Golf Chapultepec, just outside of Mexico City, Mexico.
In this article, I will present to you some players to consider from each price tier for FanDuel PGA. Some plays will be geared toward cash games, and some for GPP tournaments. Some of course will also technically qualify as both. As we break each play down, I will be sure to specify which type of contests I am targeting that player in.
As a special thank you to Fantasy CPR readers – we have a $50 Picks and Divots FREE ROLL for you sponsored by our friends at FantasDraft for Thursday’s PGA DFS action!
I will give two players to target from $11K up to the top salary, two targets from the $10K-$11K range, and two from the $9-10K range. After that will come my top value plays from the $8-9K range, along with a couple of GPP flyers to consider for tournament play. Last but certainly not least, I will end the article the ever popular sample lineup we like to do here at FantasyCPR. Before we get to all that, let’s check out how things fared with last week’s sample lineup!
FanDuel PGA: The 2019 Genesis Open Recap:
G – Jon Rahm – $11,800 – (89.9)
G – Matt Kuchar – $10,300 – (73.3)
G – Adam Scott – $9,600 – (98)
G – Charles Howell – $9,600 – (78.1)
G – Martin Laird – $9,400 – (8.7)
G – Jason Kokrak – $9,200 – (71.3)
(419.3)
Well it certainly wasn’t pretty. In fact, I had the opportunity to watch all day on Sunday, and when that wind picked up late, you could just tell half of those guys just had no idea what to do. With the wind in your face gusting, it was close to a 3-club up situation for some guys, which will make any course difficult.
Other than Justin Thomas, those that notably struggled parts of Sunday include basically that whole lineup above. Other than Martin Laird of course, who had an awful first couple days and was the only missed cut of the week.
Bottom line, this lineup was able to cash in large field 50/50’s once again, as I finished anywhere between 35-42 in my 100 man contests. That marks two weeks in a row, and five out of six to start 2019.
We have a star-studded small field for this weeks WGC-Mexico Championship. There is no-cut, so all golfers are guaranteed the weekend. Without further ado, let’s check out this weeks FanDuel PGA picks!
FanDuel PGA: Top Tier Picks: ($11,000+)
Justin Thomas – $12,000 – (Cash/GPP)
With a small field and no-cut this week, picking the winner for your DFS squads is imperative to take down a GPP tournament. With such a balanced field and most of the best players in the world in action, picking the winner will be arguably just as hard this week as it is for a major.
While Dustin Johnson is a past winner here at the WGC-Mexico, Thomas has two top-five’s the last two years and a runner-up. He lost in a playoff to Phil Mickelson last year, and is coming off his solo second place finish last week at The Genesis Open. JT has three top-fives in his last four tournaments, and I think he puts it all together and seals the deal this weekend. Thomas will be the anchor in my cash games this week, and I will have some GPP exposure as well.
Rickie Fowler – $11,400 – (GPP)
I have made the decision to fade Dustin Johnson this week, well simply because I can’t play everyone over $11K and you have to draw the line somewhere. But seriously, I really like everyone you see here on this page just a little more this week. With the consistency of Jon Rahm, I believe he is safe to fire up in all formats as well. I feel like I write him up every week though, so let’s touch on Fowler instead.
Fowler won the Waste Management Phoenix Open the last time he teed it up, and was fortunate enough to have missed the terrible weather in the last two events. He doesn’t have the greatest history here at the WGC-Mexico, but he looked solid enough in his last action that I will have a few shares this week. All in all, Fowler has notched three top-fives in his last five tournaments.
***Also Consider – Jon Rahm $11,700 – Rory McIlroy $11,600***
FanDuel PGA: Mid Tier Picks: ($10,000 – $11,000)
Tony Finau – $10,700 – (GPP)
I am finally jumping on the Finau bandwagon this week. I want to get in on the action before he gets back to perfect form while he is still cheap, and an event like this with numerous golfers more expensive, this looks like the week to hop on board. He was solid at the Riviera last week until the weather and scheduling took a turn, and he should be able to put it together for four rounds this week.
Much like with guys like Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, I don’t think Finau has been consistent enough to play in cash games. However, he makes for a perfect tournament play this week. He might be pretty popular, but his solid play around the greens make his game a perfect fit here. Finau T-27 here last year, and my bet is that improves on that by a mile, and is in contention on Sunday.
Tommy Fleetwood – $10,300 – (Cash)
So this is my third PGA article this week, and I have talked about pretty much everyone in this one at some point already, but I am doing my best to mix it up, and keep each blurb relevant to the site we are talking about. I hope you already read those articles by the way, and if you have, you will know that I am all about the Englishman Tommy Fleetwood this week.
I was close to pulling the trigger on Fleetwood last week for the Genesis Open, and even though the price was right, I remember watching him at Pebble Beach the week before and he did not look like he was into it one bit. He was decent last week however, showing improvement and playing fairly solid through the conditions on Sunday.
Fleetwood was only able to finish T-28 at The Riviera and didn’t really pay off his price tag scoring just 62.9 FDP. With a runner-up finish here at Club de Golf Chapultepec in 2017, I think Fleetwood puts together a solid four days, and could very well win here.
***Also Consider: Marc Leishman $10,800 – Gary Woodland $10,100***
FanDuel PGA: Low Tier Picks: ($9,000 – $10,000)
Rafa Cabrera-Bello – $9,900 – (GPP)
There are grumblings that my guy RCB could be chalky this week, but my thought is, that will be likely only be the case over on DraftKings where he is a bit under priced. In my opinion, the price is very fair on Bello this weekend, and my hope is he goes ignored with all of the solid golfers in the mid 9K range.
I love Webb Simpson and Charles Howell basically any time they are under $10K, but this looks like a week where Rafa could be right in the thick of things on Sunday. The native Spainiard has put together four straight top-25’s, and was in contention here in Mexico last year, with a T-3 finish. I would be totally comfortable swapping Webb Simpson out of my cash lineup for him, but Simpson just rates out a tad more safe for me.
Tyrell Hatton – $9,200 – (Cash)
Next to maybe Fleetwood and Finau, Tyrell Hatton is one of my favorite plays this week. I really hope that missed cut at the Genesis Open last week scares a few people off, because this is the price point where we will need one or two golfers for cash games. It is just wishful thinking of course, because Hatton is well on his way to being chalk this week, but maybe we see some Kevin Kisner shares in cash games.
Prior to his missed cut, Hatton notched three top-25’s in a row on the PGA Tour going back to the CJ Cup, and his history at Club de Golf Chapultepec is the reason everyone should be on him. He tied for third here last year, and grabbed another top-ten in 2017. I am going to be close to 80% on this one if I do my normal 25 lineups, because this price is just too low for someone with course history this solid.
***Also Consider: Webb Simpson $9,800 – Charles Howell $9,700***
FanDuel PGA: Top Value Picks: ($9,000 or Less)
Hao-tong Li – $8,900 – (Cash)
Li may be the best young player on the European Tour at the moment. The 23-year-old finished T-32 and the Masters last year, and has been making some recent noise overseas. He battled with Dustin Johnson at the Saudi International a few weeks ago, and despite a third round 62, came just a little short and had to settle for second place. Prior to the runner-up, Li finished T-12 at the Dubai Desert Classic.
Li was a bit over-matched at Club de Golf Chaputlepec last year, but I am willing to chalk that up to the fact that he was still learning the ropes at that point. He has been getting better each time out it seems, and in his last World Golf Championship action, he just missed a top ten.
That was at the WGC-HSBC Championships back in October, where he shot 4-under, and finished T-11. With no-cut this week, I can roster Li and easily fit Justin Thomas, and go fairly balanced with my other four golfers. That seems like the winning recipe for this week, as I try to make to make it 6-for-7.
***Bonus GPP Flyers: Danny Willett $8,100 – Eddie Pepperell $8,000 – Joost Luiten $7,800***
