There might not be a bigger mismatch in the round of 16 than Schalke and Manchester City. The Citizens are tied for first in the Premier League and one of the favorites to win the Champions League. Schalke were able to finish second in their group but have had an awful season and are 14th in the Bundesliga.
Schalke have not been good since the Bundesliga returned from the winter break. The Royal Blues have won only one of their five games, picking up just five points. Domenico Tedesco’s team have struggled to score goals and keep the ball out of their own net. Despite bringing in several strikers over the past few seasons to replace Klass-Jan Huntelaar, they have been busts. Former City youth academy player Rabbi Matondo was considered surplus at City and was sold to Schalke during the winter transfer window. Matondo will get his chance to prove City wrong with a big performance against his former club. At the back, former City defender Matija Nastasic could have a busy day, as the Citizens will likely control the game against Schalke and constantly be on the attack.
For Manchester City, winning the Premier League is not enough anymore. The club is looking to capture their first Champion League title. Over the past five seasons, City have been knocked out at the round of 16, three times and have never made it past the semifinal. After a rough finish to 2018, City have been great in 2019. The Citizens have won six of seven games, outscoring opponents 20-4. Pep Guardiola’s team are one of the best attacking teams in the world, with not only some of the best players in the world but an incredible amount of depth. Sergio Aguero leads the club with 23 goals in all competitions and has been on fire lately, scoring seven goals in his last four games. Wednesday’s game will also serve as a coming home party for Leroy Sane. The former Schalke player was sold for a record fee and has 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions for City this season.
