After the game against Louisville on Wednesday night, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim was in a car accident that killed a pedestrian.

Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim was behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck and killed a man on I-690 shortly before midnight on Wednesday night. The news was first reported by Syracuse.com.

Jorge Jimenez, 51 years old, was determined to be the passenger of a vehicle that was involved in a separate accident due to bad weather. The disabled vehicle had struck a guard rail and was in the middle of the road. The vehicle driven by Boeheim tried to avoid the vehicle but wound up hitting Jimenez, who was standing on the side of the road. The time of the accident was 11:22 p.m. ET.

Boeheim released a statement on Thursday morning.

"“I am heartbroken that a member of our community died as the result of last night’s accident. Juli and I extend our deepest sympathies to the Jimenez family. Out of respect for those involved, I will not be providing further comment at this time.”"

Field sobriety and alcohol-sensor tests were done on both drivers and came up negative for signs of impairment. No tickets have been issued at this point, and Boeheim and the other driver are cooperating with an ongoing investigation.

Speeds have yet to be determined, but district attorney Bill Fitzpatrick told WSYR that Boeheim was traveling at the proper speed for the highway.

Even with no alcohol or drugs in his system, and winter weather in upstate New York as an unassailable factor, there will be broader legal questions regarding Boeheim’s role in the incident. It’s also unclear if Boeheim had a passenger, who could be considered a witness to the accident.

The Orange played and beat No. 18 Louisville Wednesday night at home at the Carrier Dome, and the game ended around 9 p.m. ET. But that’s not important, other than to flesh out timing, as a man has lost his life in an unfortunate car accident.
