The super middleweight division has thinned out, and Chris Eubank Jr. and James DeGale are fighting to make their ways to the top of the division.

The super middleweight division is becoming a desolate place. George Groves retired, and Gilberto Ramirez intends to move up light heavyweight. That gives boxers like Chris Eubank Jr. (27-2, 21 KOs), and James DeGale (25-2-1, 15 KOs) a chance to thrive, but only one of them can advance after they meet on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Both men have lost within their last three fights. Eubank lost a lopsided unanimous decision to George Groves a year ago. It was a massive disappoint considering he looked fantastic against Avni Yildirim one bout before, knocking him out in sensational fashion in three rounds. Groves exposed Eubank’s lack of ring IQ. Hopefully, he learned from that experience.

At the end of 2017, DeGale dropped a majority decision to Caleb Truax who was a substantial underdog. DeGale looked badly faded, but he redeemed himself by defeating Truax in 2018 by unanimous decision. This is the first major test for both boxers since their previous losses.

Eubank and DeGale are both aggressive fighters who have a penchant for leaving themselves open to attack. Their styles might mar the anticipated action of the bout—Eubank is an orthodox boxer and DeGale is a southpaw.

Boxrec.com has Eubank, and DeGale rated in their super middleweight top 10, although Eubank has a higher rating at the two-spot compared to DeGale’s eighth-place evaluation. Most expect fireworks when they collide.

The undercard features several intriguing matchups. Undefeated heavyweight Joe Joyce (7-0, 7 KOs) takes on former WBC title holder Bermane Stiverne (25-3-1, 21 KOs). Joyce is on the fast track to a title shot. He’s a KO machine who recently stopped Joe Hanks.

Stiverne was the WBC champion but lost his title to Deontay Wilder in 2015. He has been inactive since and most recently got devastatingly knocked out by Wilder in 2017. He was out of shape, and lethargic. This is his last chance to be a relevant boxer.

Also appearing on the fight card is former IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby (26-2, 9 KOs). He lost his title in his last bout to Josh Warrington in an absolute war. He’s looking to rebound against Omar Douglas (19-2, 13 KOs).

Next. Leo Santa Cruz victorious over Rafael Rivera. dark

Eubank and DeGale are both British, so neither man holds a true hometown advantage. The fight will be staged at London’s O2 Arena and Showtime is carrying the action. Since the contest takes place in England it will be televised at 3:45 PM ET. You can also stream the fight using Showtime’s app.
