Manchester City have won 13 of their past 14 games in all competitions and defeated Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday, despite conceding two penalties and being reduced to ten men for the final quarter of the match.
Chelsea suffered a chastening 6-0 away loss to today’s opponents earlier in February and trail Pep Guardiola’s side by 15 points in the league, although given that they ended last season 30 points adrift of City it does represent progress of sorts. That gives you an idea of where Chelsea currently are as a club, and while today’s final certainly provides Maurizio Sarri with a chance of redemption, it also poses a risk of further humiliation.
Chelsea’s 0-2 FA Cup home defeat to Manchester United in their last game did little to improve the mood of the West London club’s supporters. There was a deserved away win over Malmo in the Europa League in between those games against the two Manchester giants, but seeing as the Swedish club’s record transfer cost just £1.35m, that perhaps wasn’t such an impressive achievement.
