Manchester United face Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, Feb. 24. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool; Liverpool vs. Manchester United. A tie with so much history connected to it, two of the country’s most successful teams going head to head. Two teams whose fans despise each other like nobody else. As Gary Neville explained it, it’s more complicated than hate. 

The tie between the two has doubly significance on Sunday, however. The reverse fixture triggered the firing of Jose Mourinho and the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The gravity of that 3-1 win was much more than the result suggested. It signaled the real changing of the guard between the two clubs. Yes, Liveprool have been on their way up, and United on their way down ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left, but this season Man United see themselves being overtaken by not just one, but both of their most hated rivals.

The focus for Manchester United will obviously be on themselves first and foremost. The Champions League spots are in their ambition, and it’s theirs to lose currently.

There has been an evolution in play for United under Solskjaer already. United are expressive when they go forward, reverting back to the quick counter-attacking football that made them so lethal under Ferguson. Defensively — more impressively — they are compact and organized and have shown that they are a match for the big teams as well. Besides the loss to Paris St. Germain in the Champions League, United have been close to their best in every game under Solskjaer so far, and you can bet your house that they would have learnt some valuable lessons from that defeat.

Liverpool are a completely different proposition, however. Being at Old Trafford, United will be expected to control and dominate the play in the opening stages. Liverpool wouldn’t mind that, though, they are at their most lethal off the ball using the gegenpress to push up high and strike on the break. If United were worried about the pace of Kylian Mbappe against PSG, they will have to be doubly worried with the likes of Mohamad Salah and Sadio Mane spearheading the Liverpool attack.

Both teams have a lot to play for, but it’s not like they would need any extra motivation anyway. Liverpool can open up a three-point gap at the top by the end of the weekend, with Manchester City not playing, and United can maintain a stranglehold of the fourth place spot they currently occupy.
